Results of the Satoyama Initiative International Workshop

The Ministry of the Environment of Japan convened the "Satoyama Initiative International Workshop" in which members of the academia, government officials from 7 Asian countries and relevant international organizations participated on March 6th, 2009 in Tokyo.
The workshop was held under the theme of "realizing sustainable rural society living harmony with nature" and intended to exchange information on case studies and key issues of management of natural resources in each country. Intense discussions on "necessary measures for the objectives and promotion of the Satoyama Initiative" as well as "establishment of an international framework for the Satoyama Initiative" were held, and as a result, the Chair's summary of the workshop incorporated the following points: "significance of natural resource management in secondary nature," "key points for examining the Satoyama Initiative" such as necessity of comprehensive efforts and dynamic and adaptive approaches in accordance with changes of socio-economic situations, and "ways for future examination" including collaboration with CBD processes.
