Eco Life Fair 2006 Held in the Environment Month of June

Eco Life Fair 2006 was held in Yoyogi Park in Tokyo on June 3rd and 4th as the major event during the Environment Month. Sponsored by the Ministry of the Environment, Tokyo Metropolitan Government, and Shibuya City Office, the Eco Life Fair offered a total of 54 exhibition booths from the national and local governments, businesses, and NGOs, aiming at promoting and popularizing an ecological lifestyle. Each booth exhibited environmental conservation efforts and/or offered fun quizzes and games to teach various facts about environmental protection and what we can do for environmental protection. The Fair attracted about 79,000 visitors over the two days.

June 5th is the Environment Day. This day marks the anniversary of the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment held in Stockholm on June 5, 1972 and was established as the Environment Day by the UN on a proposal by Japan. In Japan, June 5th is designated as the "Environment Day" under the Basic Environment Law (1993).

The Ministry of the Environment has designated the month of June as the Environment Month in Japan. In cooperation with related ministries and local governments, the Ministry carries out various activities to raise awareness of environmental conservation.

Also held on June 3rd and 4th was the Eco Car World 2006 (sponsored by the Ministry of the Environment, Environmental Restoration and Conservation Agency, and Yokohama City). It promoted an ecological lifestyle by displaying and allowing test driving of several models of low emission vehicles gathered in Yokohama.

An Eco Style Street

In addition to Eco Life Fair 2006, "Eco Style Street," a transformed Shibuya Park Street, continues until June 11th with displays of greenery and ecological messages. Eco Style Street that aims at promoting an ecological lifestyle was made possible through cooperation among the national and local governments, NPOs, schools, and local shops. Using Shibuya Park Street as a stage, pictorial messages to the environment appearing on banners on lamp posts and trees and flowers planted in discarded liquor barrels are on display.
