Chapter 26 RECOGNIZING AND STRENGTHENING THE ROLE OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLE AND THEIR COMMUNITIES

In view of the interrelationship between the natural environment and its sustainable development, and the cultural, social, economic and physical well-being of indigenous people, the role of indigenous people and their communities should be recognized, accommodated for, developed and strengthened, through efforts to implement environmentally sound and sustainable development.

Based on this recognition, Japan has been contributing to the United Nations Voluntary Fund for Indigenous Populations in order to promote the protection of the human rights of indigenous people in the world, and to conserve the living environments of indigenous people.
