Integrated Environmental Monitoring is lead by Dr. WATANABE,
National Institute on Environmental Studies (NIES), and Prof. Liu,
Chinese Academy of Science.
IEM has established a network of receiving stations of MODIS satellite
data, in Beijing, Urumuchi in China, Singapore and Australia, and
also set up ground-based observation sites to validate the satellite
data.
The aim of IEM is to detect and monitor environmental disasters
and degradation of natural resources such as floods, droughts,
dust storms, forest fires, air and water pollution, and desertification.
IEM also assesses ecosystem services such as water, heat, and
carbon cycling, biodiversity and food production in the Asia-Pacific
