1.Background

The Ministry of the Environment, Japan has convened the Asia-Pacific Seminar on Climate Change since the early 1990s in support of regional efforts to address climate change. The Seminar has been steadily growing in significance as a regional forum to promote awareness and exchange experiences on different issues of common interest for Asia-Pacific countries.

Countries in the region, have made substantial efforts to address climate change both at a national and international level. The Asia-Pacific Seminar offers an opportunity to discuss these achievements at a regional level, and increase awareness and understanding of the lessons they offer as countries continue to develop their responses to climate change. Also, the Seminar encourages international cooperation to address climate change.

This year, the main theme is "Asia-Pacific Regional Approach to Climate Friendly and Climate Change-resilient Society". We would be especially focusing on discussing useful policies and measures to integrate climate change issue into development planning, tools to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of ongoing and future efforts, and opportunities offered in working on climate change, from a practical point of view, and with due consideration of specific situations of the region.

In conjunction with the 15th AP-Seminar in 2005 at Yokohama, the Asia-Pacific Regional Workshop of UNFCCC was organized. This year, the Seminar will continue to take the theme of Education, Training and Public Awareness together issues such as Clean Development Mechanisms, Adaptation to climate change, and Co-benefits of climate change efforts.

Documents from past Asia-Pacific Seminars can be found at "AP Seminar Archives".
