Promote establishment of a collaborative basefor environmental cooperation in Asia

Project Name	Acid Deposition Monitoring Network in East Asia(204KB)
Location	East Asian region
Project Background	Because of the recent remarkable economic growth in East Asia region, emissions of air pollutants which cause acidification (e.g. sulfur and nitric acids) had been also increased and were projected to continue to increase. This increase raised the concern on their serious adverse effects. Therefore, Acid Deposition Monitoring Network in East Asia (EANET) started its operation in January 2001 with the aim to establish regional cooperation framework on acid deposition issues in East Asia region.
Objectives	The objectives of the EANET are [a] to create a common understanding of the state of acid deposition problems in East Asia, [b] to provide useful inputs for decision-making at local, national and regional levels aimed at preventing or reducing adverse impacts on the environment caused by acid deposition, and [c] to contribute to cooperation on the issues related to acid deposition among the participating countries.
Member Countries	Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Japan, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Philippines, Republic of Korea, Russia, Thailand, Vietnam (alphabetical orde)
Project Achievements	Under the EANET, participating countries have implemented the acid deposition monitoring using the common measurement protocols for the past 10 years, and through the quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) activities of monitoring data, the activities have provided high quality data which are internationally appreciated. The EANET has also contributed to capacity building through the support of monitoring techniques and training programmes in participating countries, and has promoted research studies related to acid deposition issues. Japan has supported these activities, as the country with the largest financial contribution to the network, and as the country which possesses advanced techniques and experiences on monitoring.
Planned Activities	The EANET developed the Medium Term Plan for 2011-2015, in which the following activities, among other things, are planned in the period; [1] continuation of monitoring, improvement in monitoring methodologies, increase in the number of regional monitoring sites and implementation of QA/QC activities, [2] analysis and assessment of the state of acid deposition, [3] capacity building and technical support, [4] promotion of studies on various methodologies for measurement of air concentrations, the effects of acid deposition and other priority chemical species, and models to assess and analyze the trend of acid deposition, and promotion of emission inventories, [5] promotion of public awareness on acid deposition, and sharing a common understanding on atmospheric environmental issues, [6] consideration on the extension of the scope of the instrument and institutional arrangement of EANET. Japan plans to continue its financial and technical support for the EANET activities.
